Spring like

The sun comes up over a tranquil Bay, a far cry from the beginning of the week.....
though careful inspection of the waterline along the quay still reveals a ground sea in evidence....
there are only a handful of boats left in port.

Season over

Gurnards for bait covered to keep the gulls away.....
wait on the quay alongside the Emma Louise and Intuition.....
while alongside the market all ahnds guide Royden reversing the trailor alongside the Little Pearl....
so that the ring net can come ashore marking the end of the winter's sardine fishing for the boys.

Waning

The Lyonnesse makes her way back to Newlyn.....
while the waning moon sets over the top of the village.....
Thursday's market hall......
plenty of tidying up to do aboard the Resurgan.

Easy on the eyes

Visiting Sennen lifeboat nestles between the lugger Ripple and Ivan Ellen.....
good job the residents here weren't quite as touchy about changes to the vista in Newlyn or maybe the Harbour and the RNLI may have been forced to go to the High Court just to get the access bridge passed - though it does have a certain charm at high water of an evening.....
a fresh set of nets in bins wait to go aboard the Carol H before she sets off on her next trip.

All eyes on the High Court

Yesterday saw the start of an appeal in the High Court over the proposed jetty and road access in Helford. It is hoped that the hearing will be concluded today. Coverage of the story in full from yesterday can be found here.

Gales for Goss and the Spirit of Mystery

The boat's latest position from their website shows the boat due South of the tiny island of St Pauls - map courtey of Google Maps - just type in a Lat & Long reading to fix a postion anywhere in the world.
It's been a roller coaster ride with a succession of gales or near gales and lulls for the Spirit of Mystery on this final leg of her trans-oceanic voyage. Listen to Pete Goss being interviewed by Radio Cornwall as he talks excitedly about how they are fairing aboard the boat as it traverses the notorious Southern Ocean. They are expecting a significant storm over the coming days and may look to seek shelter in the tiny haven that is St Pauls.

A ground sea running

There's a good chance the local surfers will take advantage of the wave running down the back of the quay in a spot known as the graveyard......
back in after a trip cut short thanks to the blow, the Nowell brothers land to a lorry.....
a handful of 'Bricky' beamers lay off the end of the New Quay....
along with the 3 Sons......
and the Goodwill....

with a strong offshore wind on the south coast only the local surfers will be happy today with this ground sea running!

The missing bridge

Young Roger Nowell making his way up the harbour to land at the market after being forced back in by a big ground sea running in front of tomorrow's big depression......
causing all through traffic to take the Penzance by-pass and shrouded in plastic sheeting, Ross Bridge has been lifted on to the road and is currently being shotblasted and repaired - to the right, the stern end of the Scillonian III is visible while she undergoes her annual refit in Penzance dry-dock.....
an unusually shaped piece of cut granite sits outside the entrance to the Abbey Warehouse development.
