fishermen fish merchants, fish
processors and related
fishing businesses will be able to access a new one-stop
shop for advice and information when the visit the new Cornwall Fisheries
Resource Centre. The project, based on the successful West
Cornwall Farm Business Resource Centre, has been developed by the Objective
One Fisheries
Taskforce, Newlyn Fish Industry Forum (NFIF) and Cornish Fish Producers
Organisation (CFPO) with the aim of providing a ‘one-stop-shop’ for
information or advice on a range of issues and to co-ordinate industry-specific
training
to anyone in the fishing industry. “This
is a fantastic facility for anyone engaged in the fish industry to use, not
just fishermen and not just those from Newlyn; it is for members
of
the fish trade throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly,” said Jon
Lansley, the Centre’s administrator. Housed
in a newly renovated building, located on the harbourside on Newlyn’s
Strand. The new facilities include three computers which can be used
for informal training or searching the Internet for information about
anything from packaging to processing.

Seafood Cornwall quality consultants, Robert George (far right) and Micky Bacon (back) discuss the facilities in the new centre. They are currently working on the quality of fish caught and handled at sea right through the supply chain from auction conditions throught to local processors. Simon Cadman - Fisheries officer, Cornwall Sea Fisheries Committe looks on with interest. The centre will also facilitate online learning through local further education providers.
